When North Texas
Samoyed Fanciers, Inc. was formed in 2002, the membership unanimously
voted to make "rescue" a primary focus. North Texas Samoyed
Fanciers, Inc. and North Texas Samoyed Rescue, Inc., a nonprofit
corporation, work closely together to this end.
Members of
North Texas Samoyed Fanciers, Inc. have been actively involved in rescue
work since 1993. It is estimated that 250 dogs have been
rescued to date,
23
in 2006, 13 in 2007 and nine in 2008! Our affiliate,
North Texas Samoyed Rescue, Inc., was formed in November 2004. NTSRI
is a 501(c)(3) corporation. Donations to NTSRI are tax
deductible.
Rescued Samoyeds
find their way to North Texas Samoyed Rescue, Inc. from many
sources: through cooperation with local animal shelters; owner
surrenders; and strays that are rescued by individuals. On arrival,
the dogs are examined by a veterinarian and treated for heartworms
or other health problems if necessary, as well as spayed or
neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
North Texas Samoyed
Rescue, Inc. requests an "adoption fee" donation from persons
who adopt a rescued Samoyed. This fee helps defray some of the
costs involved in the dog's rescue and rehabilitation; however, in
most cases the actual cost of caring for a rescued
Samoyed and preparing him for his new home is far more! For this
reason, several fundraising events are held each year. These
include garage sales, fun matches and online auctions.
NTSRI volunteers
serve as foster homes and ensure that the rescued Samoyed is cared
for until such time as a "forever home" is found. It is a labor of
pure love, since these volunteers receive no compensation (other
than reimbursement of veterinary expenses, subject to availability
of funds) and often spend considerable amounts of money out of their
own pockets.
